Housetraining is habitually the number one main concern for the majority of families when they get a new puppy. Very few puppies will be housetrained as soon as you get them. There are two very effectual methods you can use to housetrain your puppy and you can use just one of them or you can even use them at the same time.
The first way to train your puppy is to be very vigilant and watch his actions. Puppies will squat to urinate and defecate. You must watch your puppy very attentively and as soon as he starts to change his position then scoop him up and take him to his chosen spot. If you happen to fail to see the sign and he has an mishap, you should never reprimand him as he is still just learning and he does not know what is expected of him yet. Admonishment him will just upset him needlessly.
If you happen to miss the signs totally and you come across an disaster later, do not admonish him. Dogs can only correlate to what is happening at the present and he will not know why he is in trouble if you scold him after the fact. This will just serve to confound your puppy and that will cause you more tribulations in the future.
The second manner of housetraining you can use is the newspaper method. You must cover up the entire floor of where your puppy runs around. He will immediately learn that the paper is all right to do his business on. Progressively take out more and more newspaper until there is only a small quantity left. You may then take the newspaper out to the designated spot and he will then discover that he must only go in that outside spot.
Either or both of these methods can be very helpful. You can use both methods at the same time by using alertness during the day and the newspaper at night or if you are distracted by other things at several times of the day you can use the newspaper then while using vigilance at other times.
Infrequently a puppy will go through a juncture where he seems to “unlearn” all that you thought he already knew. This is a natural event even though it can be very annoying. Do not punish him for it.
When this happens you can use his own instinctual behavior to get him back on track. A dog will usually not dirty his own space. You can use a crate and make it cozy for him so that he thinks of it as his space. If it seems he has “unlearned” his potty training you can let him slumber in his crate and the moment after you let him out, take him to his designated spot. He will need to relieve himself right away and he will quickly get in the custom of only going in his spot.
Housetraining a puppy does not nearly need to be as intimidating as you may have come to expect. When you use either of these two methods, combined with some patience, your new puppy will be housetrained before you know it.
