Dog Training Jumping On People

It is important through proper dog training jumping methods that you teach your dog that jumping on people is not an acceptable method of greeting them. Dogs and puppies usually jump up on people because they are excited to see them. Often this behavior has been reinforced by the owner throughout puppyhood by allowing it to continue and only becomes a serious problem when the puppy is a full-grown dog.

When the puppy is small his owner is usually on the floor playing with him allowing him to jump up and get hugs. This is fun for the puppy as well as the owner but starts the reinforcement that it is OK to jump on people for love and attention. As the puppy grows, many owners allow this behavior to continue so it becomes ingrained as acceptable behavior.

When the puppy becomes a full-grown dog and still greets his owner and guests in this manner, problems can result. If the dog is large he can pose danger to small children and embarrassment to the owner when well-dressed dinner guests arrive at the house. Through proper dog training, jumping on people can become a behavior of the past.

A dog can be trained to not jump on people by a method called stay/sit. When you come into a room and your dog is excited to see you and wants to jump up on you, command him to “stay!” or “sit!” At first your dog will be confused because he has been allowed to jump on you for a long period of time. Commanding your dog to sit/stay calms him down and when calmed down you can bend over and give him a hug.

This dog training jumping method does work after a period of time if you are consistent with its use. It may take several weeks or months before your dog or puppy fully complies with your commands but the end result will be a much better behaved pet. You will be able to invite well-dressed friends to your house without the worry that your dog will mess up their clothing.

If you have small children in your house or in the neighborhood you will feel safer that your dog will not cause them injury once your dog stops jumping. Also, you will get a sense of satisfaction that your dog or puppy is maturing into a well-behaved pet. Without this type of dog training, your pet’s behavior will be chaotic instead of orderly.
